Two Saints: One Mother's Prayer

The Church Celebrates Saints Monica & Augustine

August 27 & 28

Before Saint Augustine became one of the Church's greatest saints, he was the son of a mother who never stopped praying for him.

Discover the life of Saint Monica, whose persistent prayers and unwavering hope for her son, Saint Augustine, make her the patron saint of mothers and a model of faith.

Who Inspires You?

Every parish has someone who quietly lives their faith through service, kindness, and love for God and neighbor.  Our Everyday Disciples column celebrates these ordinary people whose actions make an extraordinary difference.

Do you know someone whose compassion, generosity, leadership or simple acts of kindness inspire others? Someone who reflects Christ's love in daily life?

Nominate an Everyday Disciple today and help us share the stories of faithful men and women throughout the Diocese of Scranton who are making a difference, one act of love at a time.

Nominate an Everyday Disciple

What happens when a struggling parish stops asking, "What programs do we need?" and starts asking, "How is the Holy Spirt calling us to accompany people toward Jesus?" The renewal of Holy Family Parish offers a powerful example of how prayer, trust, hospitality and intentional adult discipleship can transform parish life.  Discover practical ways your parish can move from simply offering programs to cultivating a culture where adults encounter Christ, grow as disciples and embrace their mission.

Respect Life August Prayer Guide

"The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the Blessed Mother’s entrance into heavenly glory. Mary’s Assumption into heaven reminds us that life on earth is a pilgrimage to our ultimate destination. We prepare in hope for our own passage into eternal life by the choices we make today..."

Who's Keeping Score?

"...In marriage, each spouse is called to sacrifice by voluntarily putting the needs of the other above their own.  St. Paul calls this 'mutual subordination' to one another'..."

Conviction and Authenticity:

Meeting People Where They Are

We cannot give what we do not have.  Evangelization begins with knowing Jesus, knowing who we are in Him, and allowing that relationship to shape the way we encounter others.  We do not need to have every theological answer or be an expert in Scripture to share our faith; we simply need the humility to be genuine and the conviction to speak about Him whom we know and love.

This Christmas street encounter illustrates it beautifully: when a young woman, grieving the loss of her niece and struggling to make sense of suffering, shared that she had drifted from the Church and was now praying to "creation," Michele listened with compassion and recognized a soul searching for truth.  Rather than offering a rehearsed argument, she gently pointed the woman toward Jesus -- the one she was truly seeking.

Authentic evangelization begins when we are willing to listen, recognize the Holy Spirit at work, and confidently share what we ourselves have received:  Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit still works through ordinary conversations and everyday encounters.  If you would like to grow in faith and community through a small group this fall, please contact:
