Divine Mercy Sunday

April 12, 2026

Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated throughout the world on the Sunday following Easter.  This beautiful feast was officially established in 2000 by St. John Paul II during the canonization of the Polish nun St. Faustina Kowalska.

The origins of this feast are rooted in the messages entrusted to St. Faustina in the 1930s, in which Jesus revealed the depth of His boundless mercy for all people.  These revelations, recorded in her Diary, emphasize Christ's desire that the message of His love and compassion be shared across the globe.

Divine Mercy Sunday is a powerful reminder that no matter our brokenness, weakness, or sin, we are invited to encounter the healing mercy of Jesus.  He promised abundant graces to those who turn to Him with trust and celebrate this feast with devotion.

Hundreds of the Scranton Faithful Flock to Chrism Mass

on Tuesday of Holy Week

The Chrism Mass is among the principal manifestations of the fullness of the Bishop's Priesthood and is a sign of the close bond of the Priests with him. Priests from throughout the Diocese of Scranton gathered to concelebrate the Mass and renew their promises of priestly service.

The high point of the ritual is the consecration of the Chrism, which is made by mixing the oil "with fragrances or other aromatic material", usually balsam.

Before saying the Prayer of Consecration, Bishop Bambera breathed upon the opening of the vessel of the Chrism. Chrism is a sign of the Holy Spirit, and this action by the Bishop recalls the Spirit of God "moving over the face of the waters" at creation (Gen 1:12) and Jesus' resurrection appearance to the disciples in which "he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit'" (Jn 20:22).

It is with the sacred Chrism consecrated by the Bishop that the newly baptized are anointed and those to be confirmed are signed. It is with the Oil of Catechumens that catechumens are prepared and disposed for Baptism, and it is with the Oil of the Sick that those who are ill are comforted in their infirmity.  (OBO #1)

Bishop's Youth Awards

The third of three celebrations of the Bishop's Youth Awards was held on March 22 at the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Scranton with Bishop Bambera presiding. This Mass honored young people from the Eastern and Western Regions of the Diocese of Scranton.

Be sure to congratulate the 8th and 12th grade students who received the award from YOUR parish!
